3 Mistakes That Wear Out Brake Pads Prematurely
It’s important to ensure that your brakes remain in tip-top condition at all times in order to maintain safety when driving on the road. If it seems as if you’re always at the mechanic having your brakes replaced, you may need to figure out why they’re wearing out so frequently. There could be many reasons why this is happening. Check out these three mistakes you could be making that wear out brake pads faster than average.
1. Failing to Flush Brake Fluid
Just like regular oil changes are necessary to keep your engine working optimally, brake fluid changes are important to brake life, although it’s not necessary to change brake fluid as frequently. Brake fluid should be flushed every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Failing to do so regularly can result in the formation of rust, corrosion, and more frequent brake failure.
2. Following Other Vehicles Too Closely
If you’re in the habit of following other vehicles too closely, you never know when the person in front of you is going to stop suddenly or slow down. This can require you to frequently slam on your brakes in certain situations, which wears your pads and rotors more quickly.
3. Carrying Heavy Weight in Your Vehicle
One way to prevent premature wear of brakes is to refrain from carrying heavy items in your car. If you need to transport a heavy item, then drop the item off as soon as possible. Carrying excess weight in the vehicle places strain on your brakes, as they aren’t as effective and you must apply heavier pressure for them to work.
